You will be surprised at the things to do in Chiang Khong, while most will just see Chiang Khong as a stop off when doing a VISA run or travelling from Laos to Thailand or vice versa. It is worth a stop off to explore this area.
Chiang Khong is a district in the northeastern part of Chiang Rai Province, northern Thailand. Chiang Khong also gained some fame by being the home of British cyclist Alan Bate. He broke the Guinness World Record for the fastest circumnavigation of the Earth by bicycle in 2010.
If you are looking to relax and just chill out, Chiang Khong is the perfect place. You can take a stroll along the Mekong promenade, have some food at the many riverside restaurants to relaxing at bars and coffee shops along the main road – Sai Klang Road.
So here are my top 5 things to do in Chiang Khong, other than sitting back and doing nothing at all 🙂
Chiang Khong Viewpoint
At the north of Sai Klang road up the steep hill, you will come across the Chiang Khong viewpoint.
From here you will have some amazing view looking over Chiang Khong and the Mekong.
A must see of the list of things to do in Chiang Khong.
Chiang Khong Saturday Night Market
This is a pretty fun market to go and see. The market takes up a good stretch of the main road, and you have stalls on both sides. It’s interesting to watch as the locals walk up and down the road with cars having to give way to the market goers.
You will find most things at the night market. From clothing, household goods, knick-knacks and food stalls.
The Hub Pub Chiang Khong
The Hub Pub and The Funky Box hostel is an awesome place to hang out and relax! Located just off the main road down Soi 2.
Really good selection of western food: Burgers, Fish and chips, Spaghetti, Beef stew etc.. and a selection of cold beers, local and Belgium beers.
They also offer a number of services from hiking, bicycle rental, fishing, kayaking etc…
If you find yourself in Chiang Khong, you really need to take a look at the Hub Pub. You won’t be disappointed!
Rin Bar Chiang Khong
Right on the main road, Rin Bar is the perfect location to sit and watch the world go by.
The staff are very friendly and welcoming, and the owner Rin is also happy to sit and have a conversation with you.
Good food, cold beers, live sports on TV and pool table to keep you entertained.
Well worth stopping off here for a relaxing night or two.
Bamboo Mexican House Restaurant
What can I say about the Bamboo Mexican House Restaurant, AMAZING food! I didn’t stop here for a number of days as I was checking out other restaurants. It’s a shortstop from the Chiangkhong Teak Garden Riverfront Hotel, so if you are in the area, go take a look.
All food is made fresh and to order and the owners are very welcoming. If you’re lucky, at night you will find the owner and his friends out the front with a guitar and singing along!
After the first time eating here, I made a point of stopping daily. Can’t recommend this place enough, make sure you plan to stop off here when looking for things to do in Chiang Khong!
Whatever your reasons for heading this far north in Thailand, I hope you find some time to spend in Chiang Khong!
It might just have been me, but make sure you are up to date on your vaccinations as I got bitten a lot!
